Leonardo Discusses the Future of Kylian Mbappé at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé will see his contract expire in June, and various reports reveal what the 23-year-old will decide to do with his future.

In an interview with L’Equipe (via Canal Supporters), PSG sporting director Leonardo was asked about the future of Mbappé and the reports from both the French and Spanish media regarding a new offer.

“It’s not true. We haven’t sent a specific offer. There is an important element: I think the last thing we will put on this contract will be the amount. We want to put him in the best conditions so that he becomes the best player possible,” Leonardo said.

The club chief then spoke about what the forward wants, since Mbappé has made it clear that his decision won’t solely be based on a financial one presenting a project, one that he’s at the center of it, will also be necessary.

“It’s a matter of feeling. The French player, when he starts, has the objective of playing abroad. It’s no coincidence that in the world champion team in 1998, you have a majority of players who play abroad. Same in 2018, Kylian was the only one of the eleven type who played in France. […] Now I think Kylian really has a great thinking. The feeling that there was on Saturday at the stadium is magnificent,” Leonardo said.

“Something is being created, not just for him. I’m not here to be slick, but other clubs don’t have ultras like that. It can weigh. […] There is a reality. Kylian is the best player in the world today. Messi has always been at this level, and for me, he is still at this level, but it is normal for people to arrive who, slowly… It is not a question of judging who is better. One is 23 years old, the other 34.”

Furthermore, Leonardo was asked about the percentage that they feel confident in extending Mbappé.

“I can’t say, but we have possibilities. As long as there is no signature, we will try everything; we will do everything to keep him. I don’t think he will judge on the result against Real,” Leonardo said.

“We have an upcoming generation; we have young people in training, we want to make other investments. What has been done by Qatar for ten years has brought PSG among the greats. Today, the club is a reality. He is loved, admired, respected.”

The Spanish press insists that the France international is heading to Real Madrid. Whether it’s media outlet AS or El Chiringuito de Jugones host Josep Pedrerol, they believe Mbappé is set to join Los Blancos.

Meanwhile, in France, reports suggest that PSG isn’t giving up hope on extending their superstar forward, so one of these reports will prove to be correct in a couple of months.
