Former World Cup Winner Claims Neymar’s Contract Extension is the ‘Biggest Mistake Made by PSG in Recent Years’

Neymar resolved his future at Paris Saint-Germain last year, as he came to terms with club officials on a multiyear extension deal. Now, looking back at the agreement, former World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit (via CalcioMercato) believes that the club should not have signed the Brazilian to such a deal.

“PSG’s biggest problem is called Neymar,” Petit told RMC Sport. “In addition, with his salary and a contract until 2026, he is impossible to sell, especially just a few months before the World Cup. For this reason, the biggest mistake made by PSG in recent years has been his contract renewal. How is it possible that they extended it when the player does not help the team in any way?”

PSG would have faced the risk of losing Neymar as a free transfer in 2022 had the two sides not come to terms on the extension agreement last year. Since then, Neymar has not had much to go his way, which includes suffering the notable ankle injury last November that sidelined him from multiple key fixtures in the first half of the campaign.

Overall, Neymar sure has plenty of time to prove that PSG club officials made the right decision to sign him to the extension deal.
