Paris Saint-Germain scored a goal late in the second half, where Kylian Mbappé took on the Real Madrid defense and went five-hole on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to give the capital club a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg on March 9th.
Despite conceding 21 total shots, eight of which were on target, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t blame his defense for the result during an interview with RMC Sport.
“Usually, we defend with a low block, I don’t think our problem tonight was the defense, but we had difficulty getting the ball out,” Ancelotti said. “We didn’t have any chances upfront. When we return home, we have to play differently, and we will do it. Mbappé? He is very strong; he won the match.”
Real Madrid’s defense bent much throughout the game but didn’t break until stoppage time. Now they’ll look to rebound in a couple of weeks.
