Inter Milan Striker Martinez Opens Up on What the 2021 Copa America Win Meant to Messi’s Legacy

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi achieved a long-awaited triumph over the 2021 Copa America tournament with the Argentina national team. The Argentine forward notched nine total goal contributions en route to claiming a first career Copa America win.

Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez was there alongside Messi in leading Argentina’s attack over the tournament. Overall, as he explained to Inter TV, it simply meant a lot to watch Messi also win this tournament.

“Argentina hadn’t won an international trophy for 28 years, it was an incredible emotion,” Martinez said. “It was our dream and Messi’s dream as well. He’s been playing with the national team for a long time and it was unforgettable to lift the cup at the Maracana.

“It was an important target and we achieved it with a team spirit and with Messi, who is our leader.

“He is the best player in the world, he has won the Ballon d’Or seven times and that says it all. I believe that Copa America was very important for him to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Messi also again filled up his trophy cabinet when he was awarded Copa America player of the tournament honors, as he recorded key goal contributions against the likes of Chile and Colombia.

For now, the veteran Argentine forward sure has his sights on once again opening up space in his trophy cabinet, especially as PSG currently sits at first place in the Ligue 1 standings and is also among the more notable favorites to go on and win the UEFA Champions League competition later this season.
