Lionel Messi spent his entire first-team career with FC Barcelona, spanning over 15 years. The Argentine abruptly departed this past summer when the Spanish club couldn’t fit his wages under the La Liga salary cap.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong spoke to The Guardian, where he provided some insight on his feelings from that day upon hearing the news that Messi was leaving.
“At first, we couldn’t believe it, even though there were rumors all summer long. But I never took it seriously. So when it happened, it was a shock,” de Jong said.
Despite the passing months, the de Jong claims he and the dressing room are still struggling to realize the 34-year-old’s absence. Furthermore, it also seems as though Messi has struggled with this reality considering his form this season with Paris Saint-Germain.
“He was the face of the club, so when he left, it was a blow for everyone. We still miss him. If someone is no longer at the club, suddenly things are very different,” de Jong said.
After waiting for months to adapt to French football, Messi has begun seeing criticism of his form this season following his performance against Real Madrid. The Argentine will hope to string a couple of good matches together ahead of the second leg to finish his first season in the French capital on a positive note.
