Brazil Legend Cafu Explains Why Neymar Has Not Yet Won the Ballon d’Or Award

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar’s trophy cabinet is filled with prestigious honors after another, but it does not yet hold a Ballon d’Or award.

For Cafu, he played alongside multiple Ballon d’Or winners over the course of his lengthy career and he sees it as a surprise that Neymar has not yet been awarded this prestigious honor in world football, which he explained further to the Spanish-based outlet Marca.

“I am surprised, yes,” Cafu said. “I think he doesn’t need to be a world champion to be a Ballon d’Or winner. I think he can win it because of his quality and he can deserve it. Now he is injured and there are players who are better, it is true.”

Over his ongoing PSG run, Neymar has not been tabbed as a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or award. This was not the case during his time with Barcelona, as he notched a pair of top three finishes in the 2015 and 2017 final votes. His third place finish in 2017 sure came due to his keen performances for Barca over the first half of the year.

Neymar is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury suffered in November. PSG has not yet finalized his set return date.
