The 2021 Ballon d’Or award was just handed out a couple of months ago, but former Brazilian forward Rivaldo is already looking ahead to this year’s honor.
In speaking to Betfair, the long-time Brazilian international touched on this year’s top contenders for the Ballon d’Or award, where he explained why Paris Saint-Germain’s superstar trio will all be among the top favorites for the honor.
“After claiming his seventh Ballon D’or award in 2021, Lionel Messi, along with Robert Lewandowski, started the season as main favorites to compete for the trophy in 2022, but in World Cup year, other players can show up in contention,” Rivaldo said.
“I see [Kylian] Mbappe as a very interesting proposition in this competition since he has a good chance in the Champions League with PSG as well as in the World Cup. The same can be said about Neymar who plays at the same club and commands the Brazilian national team.”
Messi won last year’s Ballon d’Or as he led the Argentina national team to triumph in the 2021 Copa America tournament. The Argentine forward is well expected to make a strong case for this year’s Ballon d’Or honor.
More so, Mbappe and Neymar are also expected to be among the more notable contenders for the Ballon d’Or honor this year as well, pending on how they each perform for PSG and their respective international teams.
Mbappe and Neymar each have not yet been voted as a Ballon d’Or winner in their careers.
