Former World Cup Winner Explains How Messi Has Emerged as a Leader With the Argentina National Team

Former Argentina national team midfielder and one-time FIFA World Cup winner Sergio Batista has lauded Lionel Messi for his growing leadership within with La Albiceleste.

In speaking to TyC Sports, Batista noted that Messi has not been at his career best as of late when it comes to his on-field performances. Still, Batista sees that the current Paris Saint-Germain forward has emerged as a leader with the reigning Copa America winners.

“At the game level, this is not the best Messi,” Batista said. “This is the best Messi on a personality level, on a leadership level. I saw a faster Lionel, closer to the box, superior to this one. Today he brings what we all asked for, what is needed from these players.

“Before, we demanded leadership from him, but there were other players who were in charge of that. Today he is doing it and doing it very well.”

The Argentine forward was much lauded for his leadership over La Albiceleste’s run in the 2021 Copa America tournament. As captain for Argentina, he guided the side with his outspoken leadership and overall on-field showings, which included nine goal contributions.

Messi’s leadership has also been highly touted over his current run with PSG, including from midfielder Ander Herrera.

Overall, Messi has been quite a potent forward for PSG over the ongoing campaign, which includes five goals in UEFA Champions League play.
