Ander Herrera believes that it would take a collective effort from his Paris Saint-Germain teammates in order to get the best out of Lionel Messi for the remainder of the season.
In speaking to the Spanish-based outlet Mundo Deportivo, the veteran Spanish midfielder detailed that PSG has seen glimpses of Messi’s top form over the opening half of the campaign, but the side will need to do more in order to accommodate for the Argentine talent.
“At times we have already seen the best version of Leo, like against City at home, but I think it is also the responsibility of all of us around him,” Herrera said. “We have to put ourselves at his service to get the best out of him. Normally, those of us who are more earthly have to adapt to a new context. Now it’s the other way around because we’re talking about the best player in history.”
At the least, Messi has not had to take part in many defensive shifts over the course of matches so far this season. While this has been quite a talking point so far this season, Herrera does not see that this has been much of a problem to him.
“I’m happy to multiply myself on the pitch, to run thirteen kilometers per game,” Herrera said. “I like to do it. I want to be part of this team and I do it because I understand, like Verratti, Wijnaldum, Gueye, Paredes or Danilo, that these players need our best to perform even better.
“I put on my overalls with a smile on my face and I do it with great pleasure because I know that I am at one of the best clubs in the world.”
It will be noteworthy to see whether PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino will have any tactical plans in store for Messi in the upcoming second half of the season.
