Lionel Messi wasn’t the only Paris Saint-Germain player taking an award Monday night at the Ballon d’Or presentation. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Yashin Trophy as the best goalkeeper for 2021.

Much like Messi winning the Ballon d’Or caused some controversy, so did the Yashin Trophy. The award came down to Donnarumma and Chelsea FC goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

In the end, those who picked the winners went with the 22-year-old, perhaps with some recency bias, considering what he did at the UEFA Euros to help Italy claim the trophy.

Donnarumma spoke at his press conference to the media, discussing what’s next for him after winning the award.

“I hope to win titles with PSG, a club that I have always followed. It was my destiny to sign here. I want to win everything with this club,” Donnarumma said.

“I hope to give them back the trust they give me. We will give our all this season, but we have to think game after game because there is never anything easy. We will try to win as much as possible.”
