It’s been a couple of months since the departure of Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona, but the 34-year-old continues to be a talking part for media outlets in the city.
During an interview with ‘El món a RAC-1” (via Marca), Víctor Font, a candidate for Barça’s presidency, spoke about various topics concerning the Spanish side, including the departure of Messi this summer.
Font stated that once the Argentine forward’s current contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs out, the La Liga side needs to bring him back and allow for him to leave through the front door.
“[Messi’s] departure deserved to be through the front door. From that moment on, the club should be thinking about how Messi can return to the Barça in 2023,” Font said.
Messi departing Barcelona came as a surprise, but their financial mismanagement resulted in them not being salary cap compliant as they couldn’t fit Messi’s contract and comply with La Liga’s wage rules.
As a result, Messi remained a free agent, and with not many alternatives out there for him, the former Barcelona player signed a two-year contract with PSG with an option for a third.
