New Report Reveals the Two Main Reasons on Why Messi Refused to Join Atletico Madrid After Leaving Barcelona

There was much buzz on just where Lionel Messi was going to be heading to next following his departure from Barcelona. The Argentine forward recently confirmed that he had numerous clubs interested in signing him, but in the end, he opted to join Paris Saint-Germain.

As noted by the Spanish-based El Partidazo de COPE radio show, Messi had garnered interest from Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez was the player pushing for the reigning La Liga champions to bring in Messi. The Uruguayan forward went as far as holding talks with club CEO Gil Marin on this matter. However, Marin could only offer Messi a €20 million net per season deal.

In the end, Messi was not interested in joining Atletico Madrid due to “financial reasons” and more so, he did not want to betray Barca.

Atletico Madrid and Barca have not been fierce rivals over the past couple of years, but they do face off against each other two times a season in La Liga play.

This potential move surely will go down as one of the more notable what-if signings of this decade.
