Netherlands National Team Manager Van Gaal Discusses Wijnaldum’s Early PSG Run

Georginio Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain over the recent summer transfer window as one of the more notable midfield free transfer signings in years. However, not much has gone Wijnaldum’s way over the early portions of this season.

The former Liverpool midfielder has not earned many key starts as of late in all competitions. Most notably, he has only made one Ligue 1 start in PSG’s last four league fixtures.

Netherlands national team manager Louis van Gaal is not heavily concerned with Wijnaldum’s early run with PSG. But as he noted during a press conference ahead of the Netherlands’ upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifying fixture against Latvia, he is keeping a close watch on the midfielder’s output with the Ligue 1 giants.

“I have already discussed his case with Wijnaldum, but it is not yet the time for me to sound the alarm,” Van Gaal said. “I have a lot of confidence in certain players.”

It will be noteworthy to see on which midfield unit PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino will elect to go with to start in key fixtures over the remainder of the season.
