‘I Can’t Say I’m Completely Happy’ – Georginio Wijnaldum Opens up About Early Struggles With PSG

The first signing of the summer for Paris Saint-Germain was beating out FC Barcelona for former Liverpool FC midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. Many expected the 30-year-old to bring his Premier League form to help strengthen to midfield; however, that has yet to be the case.

In Ligue 1, Wijnaldum has only played a full 90 minutes twice in nine matches. Three times he came off the pitch for a change, and three times heading onto the pitch as a substitute. Meanwhile, in the Champions League, the midfielder only played 45 minutes against Club Brugge; meanwhile, against Manchester City, Wijnaldum only saw 15 minutes.

The transition to PSG hasn’t gone as plan, and it seems the Netherlands international is beginning to show some frustration, as he stated during an interview with Dutch news outlet NOS

“I can’t say I’m completely happy,” Wijnaldum said. “Because the situation is not what I wanted. But that’s football, and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.”

“I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit, and also did very well. This is something different, and that takes getting used to. I was really looking forward to the new step, and then this happens. It is very difficult.”

It doesn’t help that Idrissa Gueye and Ander Herrera are off to good starts this season, scoring goals in critical situations for the capital club. Wijnaldum isn’t the only player likely upset with their playing time, as the wife of Leandro Paredes also expressed her unhappiness by retweeting a stat in favor of her husband starting at PSG.
