The departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar from Barcelona were two that shocked the footballing world. Messi aspired to stay on with Barca but could not in the end due to financial complications within the club. On the other hand, Neymar pushed to leave Barca in order to sign with Paris Saint-Germain.
Former Barca and PSG defender Dani Alves sees that his former club should have done more to keep both talents. In speaking to the Spanish-based outlet Sport, Alves reflected on Messi and Neymar’s departures from Barca.
“I do not want to put my finger on the sore spot, but Barça has been losing much more than this, which is already the end of the absurd,” Alves said. “Every effort should have been made to keep them here.
“Many times it is not only a question of football but of the respect you have for everything they have given you. Everything has been wearing out. But you need to feel loved and when that is not the case, you start to think about other things.”
Both talents are now at PSG, where they each are aiming to play a crucial role in helping PSG not only achieve grand success at the domestic level but also in UEFA Champions League play.
For Barca, the side is undergoing a unique period in its history as it is now building around its promising and coveted talents. The Catalan powerhouse currently sits at ninth place in the La Liga standings and last in its Champions League group.
