Wijnaldum Opens Up on Early Impressions of Playing in Ligue 1

After years of featuring in the Premier League with Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum now appears in Ligue 1 fixtures with Paris Saint-Germain.

Wijnaldum has so far taken part in four Ligue 1 fixtures with PSG this season, including in the key 2-0 away win over Reims.

The Dutch midfielder has had one notable reaction to playing in Ligue 1, which he spoke further about to L’Equipe.

“I’ve found that teams were very defensive against us,” Wijnaldum said. “They leave very few spaces in between the lines, so it’s very difficult to find the intervals. I was expecting it, but to be honest not at that point. I take it as a mark of respect on the part of these teams for PSG, and truthfully, when you look at our team, it makes sense that the opposition isn’t going all-out in attack.”

Many managers in Ligue 1 have opted for this approach when going up against PSG. More so, this defensive approach may become the norm for the time being, especially following the club’s free transfer addition of Lionel Messi.

Overall, this game plan against PSG has not been a problem for the side yet, as it has won all five of its league fixtures, coupled with the notable 3.2 goals per match average.
