Wijnaldum Draws Comparison Between Liverpool’s Champions League-Winning Team in 2019 and PSG’s Squad This Season

New Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum featured in Liverpool’s historic UEFA Champions League-winning team over the 2018-2019 campaign. The Premier League side took down the likes of FC Bayern Munich and Tottenham over the campaign to claim yet another Champions League win in club history.

Now with PSG, Wijnaldum has his sights set on winning another career Champions League title over his ongoing run with the French powerhouse. And the Dutch midfielder is well confident that he can win this competition with the Ligue 1 giants.

In speaking to L’Equipe, Wijnaldum offered his take on PSG’s Champions League chances this season, where he referenced Liverpool’s Champions League-winning side from two years ago.

“Even with all these great players, we will have to form and behave as a team,” Wijnaldum said. “When you look at the record, it’s not always the team with the best individual players that win. You have to play as a team.

“When we won it with Liverpool (in 2019), we played against PSG and Barcelona, and they were really great teams. But we had a superior collective and that’s what made the difference. We have incredible players but we must become an incredible team.

“Everyone makes us the favorites. When you have a team like ours, of course we are favorites. But for me, that doesn’t mean anything. It’s not a guarantee that we’ll win.”

PSG will begin its Champions League campaign with its group stage opener against Club Brugge. This match may see Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe feature together in PSG’s attack for the first time this season.
