One of the weak points heading into deadline day for Paris Saint-Germain was left-back. Juan Bernat and Abdou Diallo are currently at the top of the depth chart for the position, but it seems as though the capital club wanted to find an upgrade.
The Ligue 1 side landed Sporting CP defender Nuno Mendes with only a few hours until the window closed. The 19-year-old is coming off winning the Primeira Liga with the Lisbon-based club and is considering one best young talents in Portuguese football.
PSG is receiving plenty of praise for acquiring Mendes on loan with a €40-million option to buy. One of these pundits calling this move brilliant is Jérôme Rothen, as he stated on RMC Sport (via Canal Supporters).
“He’s a big recruit for PSG. Already because from his first year, he is Champion of Portugal by being an indisputable starter. This left-back position was a problem for PSG as Bernat is struggling to come back. So yes, that was a problem,” Rothen said.
“We saw it again this weekend with Diallo in Reims … PSG hits a big blow. In addition, it is a loan, so there is almost no risk. I think with him, they can have fun on the left side and in several systems.”
Mendes is the last piece as the French giants revamped their backline by upgrading their full-back situation with the additions of Mendes and Achraf Hakimi while adding a veteran presence in Sergio Ramos.
