‘The 4-3-3 and the 3-5-2’ – Pauleta Discusses the Arrival and Formations PSG Should Use With Lionel Messi

Despite being close to a month since his arrival, the feeling remains a surreal one that Lionel Messi now plays for Paris Saint-Germain. Before the FIFA international window, the 34-year-old made his debut for the capital club.

Former PSG striker Pauleta spoke to the official website of Ligue 1, and one of the questions that the Portugal international touched on was the arrival of Messi to his former club. Pauleta stated that Messi will need some time to adjust to the French league but states that it shouldn’t take the former FC Barcelona player that long to feel comfortable with his football intelligence.

“He will be forced to adapt. But he will grow a lot with Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain. If he has the intelligence to move well, taking advantage of the spaces created by Messi and Neymar, he will often find himself in a good situation thanks to their passing quality and he will therefore be able to score a lot of goals,” Pauleta said.

Finally, one of the last responses that Pauleta gave on Messi is over the tactical side and how PSG should play when the Argentine player is on the pitch. The former striker gave two formations suitable for the Ligue 1 side to take advantage of what Messi brings to the table.

“The best system? Align the three fronts! The 4-3-3 and the 3-5-2, with Messi slightly back, are suitable devices. I’m sure Mauricio Pochettino will find the right solution to make them play together. Obviously, a certain balance will have to be kept. (…) With this attacking trio, it’s impossible for Paris to finish a match without scoring. I’m sure.”
