Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe made their first start together for Paris Saint-Germain in the team’s recent UEFA Champions League group stage fixture against Club Brugge. They failed to create many high percentage goal-scoring chances over the match, which has already brought out early criticism over whether they will succeed at PSG.
Former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte sees grand potential in PSG’s star-studded attacking trio but believes that manager Mauricio Pochettino has plenty of work to do in order to get the best out of the group.
“Usually we coaches complain about the lack of players, especially quality players,” Conte said. “In this case, we are talking about a team in which the coach has so many choices, and it is always a problem to solve.
“For the coach, the key word is balance, with Neymar, Messi and Mbappé who must always play and occupy certain spaces without giving them up. Pochettino will have to be good at finding a system of play that guarantees a minimum of security for the keeper in the non-possession phase.”
PSG will be taking on Olympique Lyonnais up next in what will be an early-season test for the French powerhouse. More so, this fixture will provide Messi, Neymar and Mbappe will another chance to put out for their first grand performance together in a key match.
