When Paris Saint-Germain landed Lionel Messi, they did so with one thing in mind, win the UEFA Champions League. In a season in which they could only have Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé in their attack, perhaps only for one year, the capital club has put all their chips to the table.
Heading into the Champions League this season, the Ligue 1 side is one of the favorites to win the competition and one former player believes that this will be the year PSG finally wins the biggest prize in club football.
In an interview with ESPN Argentina (via Canal Supporters), Juan Roman Riquelme, who’s the current deputy president of Boca Juniors, stated that he sees Messi and PSG winning the competition.
“I think Messi will win the Champions League with PSG and then retire in Barcelona,” Riquelme said. “Hopefully, Messi will continue to have fun in Paris. I don’t know if it’s weird, but we’re all excited to see him having fun with Mbappé and Neymar. If they don’t win the Champions League now, they won’t win it anymore.”
It will be interesting to see if Riquelme’s prediction comes true considering its Champions League or bust this season after PSG declined offers from Real Madrid for Mbappé this past summer.
