Lionel Messi is close to finalizing his move to Paris Saint-Germain, and there’s plenty of people in Ligue 1, including managers, who are happy to see the 34-year-old in French football.

Olympique de Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli spoke to the media, where Paris Fans relayed his comments. The former Argentina national team boss discussed the arrival of Messi to France.

Despite the rivalry between both clubs, Sampaoli understands what it means for French football to have someone of Messi’s caliber playing in Ligue 1 as it spotlights the league.

“Even if he is about to go to a club other than OM, it would be great for Ligue 1, he would be the best player in the world in our Championship, it would do Ligue 1 a lot of good, really,” Sampaoli said.

“All eyes from around the world would be on the league. If Leo comes, we wish him to be happy, to enjoy this different league. For us, that would be an additional motivation. French football has grown a lot in recent years.”
