The Copa America final will see the two heavyweights of South America football battle it out. Both Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. want to win their first international trophy for their national team.
Messi has played in previous international finals but lost all of them, including three Copa America finals. Meanwhile, Neymar wasn’t on the squad in 2016 due to his Olympic obligations. Then in 2019, the 29-year-old missed the tournament with an injury as Brazil would win the competition.
Ahead of the matchup, Neymar spoke to the Brazilian Football Confederation to discuss the upcoming matchup against Argentina. Canal Supporters would relay the comments.
“This is the final that I have always dreamed of playing. The final that everyone who loves football expects from a Copa América. A Brazil-Argentina, a classic. It is obvious that the desire to win is immense. ” Neymar said. “Messi? I’ve always said it: he’s the best player I’ve ever seen play. He’s a great friend. Only now we are in the final, and we are rivals.”
“I want to win this title, the first. I know [Messi] fought a lot to win a title with Argentina. Beyond being from Brazil, I’ve always been a fan of Argentina. What about the Brazilians who are for Argentina? I am Brazilian with a lot of pride and with a lot of love. Where Brazil is, I am for him. I respect, but let them go to hell.”
