‘The Opportunity Was Too Good’ — Sirigu Discusses PSG’s Decision to Sign Donnarumma on a Free Transfer

Paris Saint-Germain completed one of the surprise signings of the ongoing summer transfer window when it came to terms with Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer deal.

PSG did not have a major need for a goalkeeper, but the club still went out and signed the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament winner.

Former PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu much lauds the club’s decision to haul in Donnarumma, especially as it was only for a mere free transfer deal.

In speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Sirigu further discussed Donnarumma’s notable transfer to PSG, where the former Torino goalkeeper revealed that he talked to the Euro 2020 star about this possible move.

“I talked to him about the city,” Sirigu said. “But he’s an intelligent lad and doesn’t need advice.

“If he made this choice, it’s because he’s sure of it, it’s because they wanted him. They have a strong goalkeeper in [Keylor] Navas, but if you want the best, you must also make sacrifices.

“If I was an ambitious team and I could get the best goalkeeper on a free transfer, I would. Even if I have a strong one at home. The opportunity was too good.”

PSG still has Keylor Navas on the team, so it will be interesting to see on whether the Costa Rican goalkeeper will remain as its starter in this position or if Donnarumma will open up the season with this role.
