New Report Reveals the Early Plans PSG Had to Sign Messi on a Free Transfer Deal

Even though Argentine star Lionel Messi is currently a free agent, all signs point to the forward soon re-signing with FC Barcelona. One recent report noted that Messi is on the verge of finalizing a multiyear deal with Barca, which is expected to be made official within weeks.

Last year, PSG was heavily rumored to be interested in signing Messi, especially as he was just months away from hitting free agency.

As noted by ESPN, PSG sporting director Leonardo felt so confident that Messi was open to the idea of leaving Barca that he went on to mention the Argentine star to multiple agents as part of his plans for the upcoming season.

PSG well aimed to sign Messi and believed that it could not only afford to bring him in on a free transfer deal but also keep both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as well.

More so, several PSG players had conversations with Messi about joining the French powerhouse, from Leandro Paredes to Angel Di Maria.

However, PSG began to end its aspirations in hauling in Messi when Barca signed former Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, who is a notable close friend of the longtime Barca star.

PSG eventually ended its pursuit of signing Messi as it shifted its focus to continuing to revamp the team over the ongoing summer transfer window.
