Georginio Wijnaldum and the Netherlands national team open their UEFA European Championship this weekend against Ukraine. Before returning to the international tournament stage, considering they missed the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the players spoke to the media.
The newest Paris Saint-Germain midfielder recently explained his decision to join the capital club. However, members of the press wanted to know why Wijnaldum decided to spurn FC Barcelona for the French giants.
Canal Supporters relayed the comments made by Wijnaldum, with Spanish media outlet Marca providing the video coverage.
“It was a difficult choice. We negotiated with Barcelona for four weeks, but we did not come to an agreement. PSG was just faster, and their project spoke to me more. To be honest, I thought to join Barça because, in the beginning, it was the only club interested,” Wijnaldum said.
“PSG and Barcelona are both very big clubs, and both are clubs you would want to play for; I wanted to do it before the start of the Euro, and I finally chose PSG.”
