Report: PSG Emerges as the New Frontrunner for Barcelona Transfer Target Wijnaldum

Paris Saint-Germain may be on the verge of securing the signature of a veteran midfielder. As noted by the Spanish-based outlet Mundo Deportivo (via Le10Sport), PSG is now considered as the frontrunner for soon-to-be free agent and Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

ESPN reported yesterday that PSG made a late push for Wijnaldum, who had been in talks with Barcelona over the past months for a free transfer deal. PSG is said to have offered a far more lucrative contract deal to the Dutch midfielder.

As noted by Mundo Deportivo, Barca is not planning to up its offer to Wijnaldum. As it stands, Barca believes that it has a mere 50 percent chance of securing Wijnaldum as its latest free transfer signing.

Thus, it is now a waiting game between PSG and Barca as the Liverpool midfielder ponders over whether to join former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman at the Catalan club or opt for a surprise move to the French powerhouse.

If Wijnaldum elects to join PSG, this would be the first signing of this summer’s transfer window for the Ligue 1 giants. It is expected to be one chaotic transfer window for the side as club officials aim to bounce back following its second place finish in the final Ligue 1 standings.
