The first major transfer saga of this year’s summer transfer window has come to a conclusion as soon-to-be-former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum opted to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer deal.
Wijnaldum accepted PSG’s multiyear contract deal, although he also had an offer on the table from Barcelona.
PSG went all out to sign Wijnaldum. As noted by football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the likes of PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino contacted the Dutch midfielder to help sway him towards a move to the Ligue 1 giants.
On the other side, Barca midfielder Frenkie de Jong made a late attempt to convince Wijnaldum of why he should elect to join the Catalan side over PSG, according to a report from the Spanish-based outlet AS.
De Jong was in contact with Wijnaldum during their time at the Netherlands national team’s minicamp ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament.
In the end, De Jong’s late pitch was unsuccessful as PSG won the race to sign the former Premier League-winning midfielder.
Wijnaldum joins a PSG side that will be serious contenders in three different competitions next season.
