‘I Proved That I Am Capable of Playing’ — Di Maria Provides Takeaways from the Key Performance for Argentina Against Paraguay

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria starred during Argentina’s 2021 Copa America group stage fixture against Paraguay.

Di Maria played the match as if he had much to prove to Argentina’s coaching staff; he recorded the game-winning assist and won a notable eight ground duels.

The PSG playmaker comes away from this result pleased not only with the win for his side but also with the fact that he played a key role in the match.

Di Maria spoke after the match to the Argentine-based outlet TyC Sports where he reflected on just what this showing meant to him.

“I had the chance to start against Chile,” Di Maria exclaimed. “Afterwards, I was on the bench. Every time I got the chance to play, I proved that I am capable of playing.

“Today, I was given the opportunity, and I proved it again. All 28 players have the chance to play.

“If they are here, it is for a reason. If it’s my turn, I’ll do my best and give my best. If not, I will support from the outside.”

Di Maria’s biggest contribution against Paraguay came during the first half, when he assisted Alejandro Gomez for what turned out to be the game-winning goal of the match.

“As soon as I gave him the pass, I knew he was going to finish it,” Di Maria said. “It’s one of the things that a striker usually has when he gets past the goalkeeper.

“I had seen it before and, thank God, it was a goal.”

Argentina has now secured a place in the Copa America knockout stage.

La Albiceleste will clinch Group A if the side defeats Bolivia next week.

Di Maria may very well be on par to earn a critical start in this upcoming fixture.
