New Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was an early exit in the Euro 2020 tournament as the Netherlands national team crashed out in the round of 16.
The Netherlands failed to orchestrate any serious goal-scoring sequences against the Czech Republic, as Frank de Boer’s side was sent packing following the 2-0 defeat.
Former Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder comes away from the match not only disappointed with the result but also concerned with Wijnaldum’s performance in the match.
Sneijder expected much from Wijnaldum in this match considering his current status as the Netherlands’ team captain, but the new PSG talent struggled to live up to such hefty expectations.
In speaking to the Dutch-based station NOS (via Voetbalzone), Sneijder pinpointed Wijnaldum’s sluggish showing in the match as one reason for why the Netherlands failed to secure a spot in the Euro 2020 Quarterfinal round.
“I didn’t see Wijnaldum in the game today, not even once,” Sneijder said. “Wijnaldum did not perform well today.
“Today we didn’t see anything from him at all. Then you hope that the captain will take the team by the hand, but he did not do that today.”
Wijnaldum now looks ahead to making his debut with PSG next season.
