‘He Has to Win This Kind of Competition’ – Former PSG Forward Puts Pressure on Neymar to Win the Copa América

The Copa América kicks off this weekend, and Neymar Jr. will have an opportunity to win the competition with the Brazilian national team. However, the South American tournament will occur behind closed doors in Brazil.

Initially, Argentina and Colombia served as the hosts for the tournament. However, with the coronavirus pandemic and national protest, both countries had to back out.

As a result, Brazil stepped in, offering to host the competition for CONMEBOL. So now that Copa América is set to kick-off, Neymar has the chance to lift the trophy that he missed out on in 2019.

Nonetheless, that was a controversial decision. Brazil hosting the tournament caused a mutiny with the national team, who saw themselves as pawns. Their country has dealt with a significant amount of coronavirus cases over the last year. The squad felt as though the tournament would distract people from more important issues.

Despite the mutiny, there would be a solution; Brazil will compete in the Copa América this weekend after several discussions. The competition would continue as planned involving all the South American countries.

Former Paris Saint-Germain forward Reinaldo spoke with L’Equipe (via Canal Supporters), where he discussed the legacy of Neymar. The 29-year-old is healthy and ready to participate in the tournament. The 42-year-old stated it’s a trophy that the PSG superstar must win.

“If he wants to continue to be considered one of the best in the world, he has to win this kind of competition. [Neymar] needs it; he must show that he is hungry and that he will be ready for the World Cup,” Reinaldo said.

Neymar and Brazil will begin the competition Sunday evening when they take on Venezuela at the Estádio Nacional de Brasília.
