Former French forward Ludovic Giuly provided for his take on Kylian Mbappe’s ongoing contract extension dilemma with Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappe’s extension situation with PSG officials has been dragging on since last year’s summer transfer window. PSG aims to keep Mbappe at the club while the French forward still has not provided a final declaration as to whether he plans to stay or prefers to leave over the upcoming summer transfer window.
In speaking to Le Point, Giuly did not join many other former PSG talents in publicly pushing Mbappe to stay with the club. Instead, he hinted at backing Mbappe’s final decision regardless of what he decides to do in the end.
“I have my opinion, but it is personal,” Giuly said. “He has a career plan and choices to make. He has the choice to extend at PSG or to go to other bigger clubs in Spain or England. He must make the choice serenely.
“He will make his decision after the Euro. Anyway, we are very happy that he is in the national team and that he plays for Paris.”
Mbappe is well expected to be among the top contenders for the Ballon d’Or award this year. Giuly sees that Mbappe has the potential to shine in the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament, which could go a long way in his candidacy for the coveted player of the year honor.
“I think this will be Kylian’s tournament,” Giuly said. “If he has the ambition to become the Ballon d’Or, he will be there.”
Mbappe and the French national team will kick off their Euro 2020 run with a group stage showdown against Germany on June 15.
