Former French International Pires Pinpoints the Reason Behind Mbappe’s Slow Start in Euro 2020

Former French international Robert Pires claimed fatigue may be a reason for why Kylian Mbappe is off to a slow start in the Euro 2020 tournament with the French national team.

Mbappe was provided with a pair of massive tests in the Euro 2020 group stage with the fixtures against Germany and Portugal.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward failed to record a single goal contribution against the two powerhouse sides, even though he was active when on the ball over the course of both matches.

Pires sees that these performances are unlike Mbappe but believes that fatigue may be behind his sluggish form in the Euros so far.

The former Arsenal talent spoke further to RTL where he laid out his case on this matter.

“I thought he was very tired, worn out, blunt,” Pires said. “You can see it because unfortunately, when he decides to accelerate, there is no longer that gas that allows him to take speed and pass his defender.

“You can feel that something is happening physically, but then you have to understand, he was asked a lot throughout the season with PSG in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League.

“It’s up to him now to recover resources to find his game which is made of explosiveness, dribbling and in which he usually makes the difference.”

Mbappe was a workhorse for PSG in all competitions this past season as he totaled for 42 goals over 47 appearances.

The PSG star will have another opportunity to turn around his form in France’s next fixture in the tournament, which will come next week in the round of 16 duel against Switzerland.
