The Argentine national team clinched its first win of the 2021 Copa America tournament with the narrow 1-0 group stage victory over Uruguay.
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria was a second-half substitute in the match; he completed 12 passes and recorded one shot on target over his 20 minutes on the pitch.
Di Maria comes away from the match pleased with how his side picked up all three points against its longtime rival.
The PSG playmaker spoke after the match (via TyC Sports) where he provided takeaways from Argentina’s overall showing in the fixture.
“We tied the first match, and today we were able to win,” Di Maria said. “We are doing a great job. We continue step by step, match by match, trying to show what the national team is.”
Brazil is viewed by many as the clear favorites to go on and win Copa America. Still, Di Maria is not throwing in the towel with his aspiration of seeing Argentina win this tournament and thus finally ending its major international trophy drought.
“Argentina is always a candidate, but Brazil is at home and doing things very well,” Di Maria said. “We are going to try to achieve the dream we all have.”
Argentina will now look ahead to a key Copa America group stage encounter with Paraguay on Monday.
