Neymar Jr. will spend the rest of his prime years with Paris Saint-Germain, and although supporters are happy that the French giants locked up their superstar, others aren’t.
Brazilian journalist Milton Neves stated on his UOL Esporte blog that Neymar chooses to remain in the darkness after extending with the capital club. Neves adds that Neymar could’ve taken over the Catalan throne after Lionel Messi departed.
Furthermore, Neves adds that Neymar wants to stay in his comfort zone rather than challenging himself in Europe’s strongest leagues and against better competition.
“The injuries are more and more frequent, technically he is less and less demanding, and the team more and more dependent on his flashes. The number 10 shirt of the Brazilian team could shine in the best and most traditional teams in the world. Could face challenges in the strongest leagues,” Neves wrote.
“You could step out of your comfort zone. But [Neymar] preferred and prefers to remain in the weak spot of everything. He preferred to follow PSG, which, let’s face it, is nothing more than a São Caetano with a more beautiful name.”
Neves fails to mention that had Neymar decided to stay at FC Barcelona, the 29-year-old would remain in Messi’s shadow. When the Spanish side defeated PSG in 2017 for the remontada, Neymar led the way, yet Messi received all the publicity for the comeback.
Furthermore, Neymar has advanced further in the UEFA Champions League than Messi and Barcelona since leaving in 2017. The PSG has bucked the trend that the Spanish giants are supposed to have the best Brazilian players as they have in the past, whether it’s Ronaldo Nazário or Ronaldinho.
It’s 2021, and things are changing. For some, this new football world might be a bit scary as the norm begins to change.
