FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi’s contract expires next month, and the 33-year-old will need to decide what to do with his future. The Spanish club wants to extend Messi, but one former player advises that the Argentina international should depart Spain.
In an interview with Sport Bild (via Diario AS), Mario Kempes, who won the 1978 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, advises his compatriot to seek greener pastures with another big club in Europe considering Barcelona’s financial situation.
Kempes states that if Messi wants to win another UEFA Champions League, there are three options for the player to consider this summer.
“Messi is torn. He is very comfortable in Barcelona, but he realizes that winning the Champions League again with Barça is few. In recent years Barcelona has always been eliminated very early, and the club is having great difficulties in building a new winning team due to the financial situation,” Kempes said.
The capital club has not hidden its interest in bringing Messi to the French giants, and with Neymar Jr. extending his contract, the 29-year-old could convince his former teammate to consider heading to Paris.
“He would have to meet again with Guardiola, go to Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern. They are the clubs that either has the money or the players to be successful,” Kempes said.
It will be interesting to see what Messi decides to do with his future and whether Les Parisiens are in his future.
