‘The Wealth of Experience Makes You Better’ — Pochettino Reflects on Takeaways from the Tottenham Run

Mauricio Pochettino took a look back on learning lessons and takeaways from the managerial run with Tottenham.

During his time with Tottenham, Pochettino helped the club emerge as a perennial contender in the top-four of the Premier League. The Argentine manager did not win a trophy during his time with Spurs, but he did have grand achievements, such as appearing in the UEFA Champions League final.

Now with Paris Saint-Germain, Pochettino has not forgotten his roots from his time with Tottenham. And as Pochettino told Le Parisien, he does not believe that he is much of a different tactical manager now than when he was at Tottenham.

“Our principles remain the same,” Pochettino said. “But we adapt, we continue to evolve according to what we encounter. We are not the same coaches as at Southampton or Tottenham, that’s obvious. The wealth of experience makes you better. We are looking to improve our methods, to be more efficient.”

Pochettino also touched on the media pressure that has come over his current run with PSG. The Argentine manager believes that with the expectations and grand publicity, there is much more pressure to succeed at PSG than with Tottenham.

“Yes, because the club is more watched, more publicized in the world,” Pochettino said. “Tottenham was too, but what PSG generates is a step above.”

Pochettino has plenty of goals outlined for his current PSG run, which includes possible success in the Champions League competition.

“You have to lay the foundations for a solid future and any change requires a little time,” Pochettino said. “PSG is built to win. We need to analyze what is missing to win the Champions League and get closer to the goal little by little. Progress must be constant. We must have the feeling of being closer and closer.”

Pochettino will be aiming for a Champions League final appearance with PSG this season.
