‘I Hope to God to Keep Me Calm’ — Navas Discusses the Mentality for Penalty Kick Situations

Keylor Navas has delivered for Paris Saint-Germain multiple times this season, especially in penalty kick situations.

In all competitions so far this season, the Costa Rican goalkeeper has recorded three penalty saves. This includes recent saves against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg and against Lille OSC in the Coupe de France. Both saves played a key role in PSG clinching wins in the two fixtures.

As Navas detailed to PSG TV, the Costa Rican goalkeeper asks for God to keep him calm and prepared before facing penalty attempts.

“When I’m in this situation, I try to concentrate,” Navas said. “I hope to God to keep me calm to make the right decision. And I tell myself that I’m going to save that penalty. Often I can not do it, many players are very skilled, and they shoot well.

“But if I have the slightest chance to stop it, I do everything to seize the opportunity. Thank God I’ve done it a few times. I’m not trying to intimidate the opponent, it’s a tense moment for everyone, you just have to prepare and apprehend the situation. And give it your all.”

Navas remains in top form in all competitions. Coupled with his recent massive penalty attempt saves, the Costa Rican goalkeeper has continued to come up in clutch situations for PSG, which has much-needed at this point in the season.
