Outside of Olympique de Marseille, every club in France wants to see Paris Saint-Germain do well in their UEFA Champions League matches. When French sides compete in European competitions, it’s in everyone’s best interest to see them go far in the tournament.
Last season, having PSG and Olympique Lyonnais reach the Champions League semifinal not only spotlights Ligue 1 but improves the league’s UEFA coefficient rating. Meaning France’s top-flight could receive more spots in Europan competitions.
As of now, Ligue 1 has three spots, with the top two clubs proceeding directly to the group stage. Meanwhile, the third club heads to the third qualifying round, and the fourth-place team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.
Ligue 1 would like to see four spots in the Champions League, and to so, French clubs need to perform well to improve their UEFA coefficient. Lille OSC manager Christophe Galtier understands this, so he is happy to see the capital club do well in the Champions League, as Galtier stated during his press conference with Canal Supporters relaying his comments.
“PSG will play their return match. Congratulations to the Parisians. It’s a great performance to beat Bayern at home. In my opinion, it will be an achievement if they manage to eliminate them. In the first leg, they gave themselves the means to believe in the feat,” Galtier said.
