During the Qatar Sports Investment era, Paris Saint-Germain has had this aurora around them that Ligue 1 clubs need to fear. In the past, opponents would plot a defensive-style game plan to come away with a point.
Aside from losing the league in 2016-17 to AS Monaco, the capital club has had a stranglehold on France’s top-flight league. Les Parisiens have run away with the league title on various occasions. However, this season, PSG finds themselves not only in a fight for Ligue 1 but the UEFA Champions League spots for 2021-22 too.
The French giants no longer place that fear into the other Ligue 1 sides, states Canal Plus analyst Mickaël Madar during his interview with Le Parisien.
“Before, when you played against PSG, you were afraid for your goal difference. Today you are aiming for victory. It makes sense; this team plays at a monotonous pace and does not know how to defend together. I want to slap them,” Madar said. “It’s simple; they are bourgeois who are no longer hungry in Ligue 1. They are full of money.”
“Look at Draxler: a bit of a match here and there, and that’s it. He would rather receive his big salary than fight in another club. I was a player, and, at my level, I know what it means to have less desire because of the comfort. With this state of mind, I don’t see this team beating either Lille or Lyon. We are afraid of the wicked but never of the bourgeois. This PSG is no longer scary. It is pitiful.”
PSG sits in second place tied with Olympique Lyonnais with 60 points and trail Lille OSC. If the capital club drops the Ligue 1 crown, it will look back at various matches where they fumbled away points to clubs that once feared them.
