Ángel Di María and Paris Saint-Germain announced that both sides had agreed to a one-year contract extension that will keep the 33-year-old in the French capital for another season. However, L’Equipe (via Culture PSG) reports that the deal has an option that could keep the Argentina international until 2023.
Di María spoke with PSG’s website to discuss remaining in Paris and continuing his venture. One of the first questions that the forward answered is over his feelings towards extending his contract.
“First of all, I am thrilled! I am very happy to extend this adventure at Paris Saint-Germain for one more year, plus another optional one. I think this is something vital to me. I have always said I was very happy in Paris, and so are my family. My daughters love Paris, their school, their friends,” Di María said.
“Therefore, my wish was to continue here because I feel very good in this club, this city. If I renewed my contract, it is also because the club is happy with me and because the coach is happy. I hope to have the chance to be able to remain in the history of the club.”
Since arriving in 2015, Di María has played alongside great players with PSG. The 33-year-old discusses having world-class teammates to share the pitch week in and week out.
“In six years, I have seen players who have made history here, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani. Now I play with Neymar Jr, with Kylian Mbappé, players who make the history of this club and want to continue to do so, and this is something significant for me. Not everyone gets the chance to play with the best. Since I’ve been here, I have it, and I always try to enjoy it.”
Di María sits on 99 assists and needs five more assists in becoming the PSG’s all-time leader in assisting as he could surpass Safet Sušić, who has 103. Di María spoke about breaking the record now that he will remain with the capital club for another season.
“I was a little anxious during the last matches to try to reach 100 assists! This is something significant to me. Then, I hope to achieve and then exceed the 103 offerings of Safet Susic, who holds the club record,” Di María said.
“It would be something important because it would remain in the history of this club; it would be marked forever until another player has the opportunity to pass me to make history in his turn. I hope that this extension will allow me to reach these symbolic milestones.”
