Former Real Madrid youth coach Alberto Toril reflected on just why Jese struggled to find his way while at Paris Saint-Germain.
Jese and PSG came to terms on a contract buyout late last year. The Spanish forward had spent the first half of the season with the club after returning from a loan stint with Sporting CP. But with no playing time insight, Jese elected to leave the club during the final year of his deal.
Jese totaled for a mere 18 appearances in all competitions while with PSG and took on four different loan moves. The former Real Madrid forward never became a regular for the club.
Toril knows Jese quite well. The former Spanish youth coach worked with Jese during the forward’s time with Real Madrid Castilla. As Toril detailed to Goal, Jese had plenty of potential but simply did not play up to his expectations.
“He had everything, physically he was gifted: strong, fast, powerful, agile,” Toril said. “Also, technically. At that age you already saw different things in him.”
Toril provided his take on why Jese never became a reliable talent for PSG.
“At PSG, it was difficult for him to find his place again, to reach the level he had before,” Toril said.
“He had difficulty dealing with an infection, which meant that it was not a standard recovery. When you are not playing for so long, it costs you a lot.
“When he left Madrid, his life changed, with other hobbies such as music. It began to distort his life in terms of football. That put him in the position he is now.”
Jese is now with Spanish side Las Palmas where he has appeared in three matches in all competitions so far this season.
