Paris Saint-Germain is set to battle against Dijon for an upcoming Ligue 1 fixture. At this point in the season, PSG is typically not accustomed to having any must-win league matches. But due to its current third place standing, every fixture is now a must-win one for PSG.
Marco Verratti will not feature against Dijon due to a slight precautionary injury. But he does see that this match is one where winning is the only option for his teammates.
Verratti spoke further to PSG TV about the Dijon matchup.
“We need to go out on the pitch without thinking about what’s going on elsewhere or about the league table,” Verratti said. “We need to play with 100% of our weapons. We can win, we are stronger, we have top players but we need to show it on the pitch.
“If we think that it’s going to be easy, we will be in trouble. We need to put in an intense performance for the full 90 minutes and win this match because it’s a cup final for us.”
PSG’s Ligue 1 season has not gone as many had predicted it would go. Injuries and underperformances have marred what was supposed to be yet another dominant league campaign from the French powerhouse.
Verratti realizes just how crucial the upcoming stretch run of the season will be for PSG.
“This year is more difficult generally, in sport, in everything,” Verratti noted. “We are experiencing a strange year, where we have a lot of Covid-19 cases and injuries. I think the context is the same across all leagues. The final sprint of the season will be intense.
“We are still in the running for the title. We have 12 ‘cup finals’ in the league, the Champions League and the Coupe de France. We will bring everything that we need to succeed. What’s certain is that we are always giving 100% on the pitch.”
PSG certainly needs this win against Dijon to keep pace with both Lille OSC and Olympique Lyonnais in the league standings.
