Former French international Jean-Pierre Papin has claimed that Kylian Mbappe could very well win the Ballon d’Or award this year.
Mbappe is just coming off of a world-class showing against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg. In the biggest fixture of the season, Mbappe scored a monumental hat-trick that showcased his growing potential as a goal-scoring forward.
This performance from Mbappe has brought many to speculate whether this will be the year that the forward will claim the Ballon d’Or honor. And for Papin (via Le Parisien), he sees that the PSG star can make a grand jump this year by winning this prestigious individual award.
“Kylian [Mbappe] has to score goals regularly and once in a while he has to make a splash like in Barcelona,” Papin said. “The only problem is that he’s going to be asked for the same performance all the time as he did at Camp Nou.
“He has set the bar so high that we will always have the same demand with him, but those who have played football know that this is not possible. He just needs to be consistent and he’s not far off winning it this year. I can see him winning the Ballon d’Or in 2021.”
There are expected to be a multitude of top contenders for the Ballon d’Or award this year. Voters will sure be watching on who the top performers will be in the Champions League knockout stage, Euro 2020 and Copa America tournaments.
