The winter transfer window is open, and plenty of clubs will be looking to sell players to offset any losses or reduce their wage bills due to the coronavirus pandemic affecting financial revenue.
French clubs not only do they have to deal with the fact that no supporters are in attendance at stadiums, which hurts one revenue stream, but Ligue 1’s television deal with Mediapro has also gone up in flames.
As a result, clubs in France will be open to selling their players more than ever. Paris Saint-Germain has always been the outlier in this system since the Qatar Sports Investments takeover. However, a few weeks ago, L’Equipe (via Culture PSG) reported that the capital club could see a revenue deficit that could amount to €200-million.
According to Le Parisien, despite the financial losses during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, Les Parisiens will not force themselves to sell players to cover losses that they’re experiencing due to the pandemic.
With the squad having a laundry list of injuries, the reigning Ligue 1 champions value depth that a player like Julian Draxler provides over the transfer fee he’d bring in a sale this January.
Furthermore, PSG believes that UEFA will need to relax financial fair play measures again, which means that owners will temporarily be permitted to put more money into their clubs’ increased losses caused by the global pandemic.
