It took a while, but Paris Saint-Germain has officially announced the hiring of Mauricio Pochettino as its 30th manager in club history. The Argentine manager will take over a PSG side that currently sits in third place in the Ligue 1 standings and is set to face FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 later this season. In essence, the former Tottenham manager comes in with hefty expectations.

Former PSG manager Luis Fernandez knows exactly the expectations that come with taking on the managerial role for the club. For the former French manager, he believes that PSG made the right decision to bring in Pochettino.

Fernandez spoke to RMC Sport about why PSG can celebrate this hiring.

“I followed his career as a manager, he did great things, not always with great resources,” Fernandez said. “I observed his teams. I liked seeing him reach the Champions League final with Tottenham. I’m happy to see him reach PSG.

“He has scope, he imposes with his charisma. I knew he wasn’t going to disappoint me. I know him, he’s someone who adapts. He will take the temperature, he is not there to revolutionize everything but to take over a club he knows well and loves.

Fernandez also touched on the previous connection that Pochettino has with the club. He believes that it will drive Pochettino to reach grand success over his tenure with the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

“He loves PSG, he has always made it known,” Fernandez said. “He will have this desire to win titles and go for the Champions League. He is a competitor.”

The Pochettino era at PSG will begin later this week in a Ligue 1 away fixture against AS Saint-Etienne.
