PSG Has the Second-Best Defense in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues This Season According to One Key Stat

Even with the departure of Thiago Silva coupled with multiple injuries this season, Paris Saint-Germain has still managed to maintain a strong defensive backline. The foundation was built by now-former PSG manager Thomas Tuchel and is continuing on with new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Overall, PSG has allowed a mere 11 goals in Ligue 1 play this season, which is the best mark in the league. This is not much of a surprise as PSG continually has led the league in this stat for years now.

Within Europe’s top five leagues, PSG is averaging a strikingly low 0.58 goals allowed per game, which ranks second behind La Liga’s Atletico Madrid (0.40).

Marquinhos and Keylor Navas are deserving of major credit for PSG’s stout defensive numbers. The Brazilian defender is now regularly orchestrating strong performances as the team’s new captain while the Costa Rican goalkeeper is doing his part to rack up clean sheets.

PSG’s backline will be key for the team in not only domestic play but also in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage this season.
