French Manager Names Marquinhos as PSG’s Most Important Player of 2020

For Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos, 2020 was a year when he emerged from a player known more within Ligue 1 as a quality talent to now being a household name within the continent. This was much thanks to PSG’s UEFA Champions League knockout stage run last season where the Brazilian defender earned starts in the midfield and scored key goals along the way.

French and current Racing-Union manager Regis Brouard has been impressed with Marquinhos’ versatility and development over the past year. Brouard has certainly taken note of how Marquinhos is now a player who can be regularly relied on to deliver crucial performances in key fixtures, per example with the team’s Champions League group stage run this season.

Brouard is naming Marquinhos as PSG’s most important player of 2020, and he explained why in speaking to L’Equipe.

“Marquinhos was effective in all the positions where he could play, in a team which is not always very balanced,” Brouard said. “We must also not forget that Marquinhos scored important goals for PSG. He knew how to wear this armband highly with great accuracy and serenity. He gave off a quiet force.

“If you’re a technician, you immediately put Marquinhos in a team, he is technical, tactical, he meets all the criteria.“

Marquinhos proved to be key in PSG’s run to Ligue 1 triumph and appearance in three different finals last season. If the club has any chance at repeating last season’s success, Marquinhos may have to mirror his recent strong performances over the remainder of the campaign.
