Report: PSG May be Forced to Choose Between Mbappe or Messi in 2021

Rumors have been swirling relentlessly since Wednesday about a possible blockbuster free transfer move that would send Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain. Neymar opened up the rumor mill following his comments on aspiring to reunite with Messi once again. If Neymar is unable to join Barcelona, this would lead many to speculate whether Messi could instead pair up with the Brazilian at PSG.

If Messi would possibly go on to join PSG in 2021, this would force the club to sell star forward Kylian Mbappe, according to a report from the Spanish-based outlet AS.

The report does not pinpoint the exact reasons as to why Mbappe would be on his way out if PSG hauls in Messi. But as with this possible mega signing, the club may be dealt with a financial dilemma within its team.

For one, PSG is coming off of a summer transfer window where due to economic restraints, the club was forced to settle for free transfer and loan signings, which gives a hint as to where the club stands financially. More so, the club may have to soon pay up as it heads into the stretch run of a contract extension dilemma with Neymar. Finally, as noted by ESPN, Messi currently makes €60 million per season from his Barcelona contract.

Put all of this together and PSG’s board may have to end up choosing between signing Messi for the final years of his prime or opt to do its best to keep Mbappe. It remains to be seen which route that PSG sporting director Leonardo will prefer to take.
