PSG Beat Manchester United at Old Trafford and They May Take Pogba Next

Paul Pogba is from the suburbs of Paris and a homecoming may be in order after the recent news that his days at Manchester United are numbered.

In an interview with Tuttosport, Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola claimed that his client wants out of Manchester.

“I can say that it’s over for Paul Pogba at Manchester United,” Raiola said. “It is better to speak clearly, look ahead and not waste time pointing fingers at guilty culprits. Paul is unhappy with Manchester United as he is no longer able to express himself in the way that he would like and as he is expected to.”

That’s a pretty extraordinary remark to make at this stage in the season and make no mistake about it, Raiola doesn’t make these comments without the approval of Pogba.

The FIFA World Cup winner is under contract with the Red Devils until 2022 following a recent contract extension, so moving him will be difficult and expensive for any interested team.

It also puts Manchester United in a tough spot. In Group H of the UEFA Champions League, they’re level on 9 points with Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig, but have to play the Germans in a match that will likely determine who advances to the knockout stage and who drops into the UEFA Europa League.

In the Premier League, Manchester United sit in fifth place, but they’re within striking distance of league-leaders Tottenham Hotspur. With so much to play for right now, things must be bad for Pogba to blow it up and force his way out.

What does this mean for PSG? Well, anyone who has watched this team this season will tell you that an upgrade in midfield is desperately needed. Marco Verratti is an unquestioned starter (when he’s healthy and not suspended), but outside of him, there’s not another box-to-box midfielder in the squad that has Pogba’s game-changing ability.

Can PSG actually sign Pogba? Well, that depends on United’s asking price. I doubt they want an unhappy Pogba in their squad and thus, the transfer fee may be reduced in order to facilitate a quick move. However, the amount is bound to be more than PSG can afford at this time.

If the Premier League side will accept a player swap, plus cash, that might be something PSG can pull off with Julian Draxler, Ander Herrera, or Idrissa Gueye the likely candidates to be part of the deal.

Even though things didn’t work out for Pogba in his return trip to Manchester United, he is still a fabulous player and someone who would instantly make PSG better. I think if Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director, has an opportunity to pull off this transfer for less than it normally would cost (while getting rid of some dead weight), he has to do it.
